Happy 4th everyone!
It's yet another holiday to buy worthless crap. (Really, who needs a separate set of towels for one day?) I mean the fireworks and excuse to buy and consume numerous amounts of crappy food and beer isn't all that bad. But when you look at it, I mean really look at it, the real reason for celebration is lost. Instead of celebrating our Independence, Americans consume more alcohol than is necessary. We set off explosives, just because we can, and we cook massive amounts of food that goes uneaten and is wasted and clogs up landfills.
I don't disagree with this holiday whatsoever, I just disagree with the way we acknowledge it. Is it really that hard to remember and honor the men that risked and lost their lives just so that we could become a free nation? Or is that asking too much of the American people? I'm not comdemming the festivites, because I love to go to them too, I would just rather that there be some sort of sole connection to that holiday, rather than an excuse to get out of work.
So on that note, I leave all you Americans with a challenge. Tonight, when you are gazing at your town's fireworks, remember the men that lost their lives. Instead of being caught up in the moment, loose yourself in the moment, remembering that if it weren't for them, than we would be in an entirely different world. Have that beer, be proud to be an American, and above all, remember the brave of yesterday and today.
